One of the nation’s leading pro-life advocates, Kathleen Eaton has earned national acclaim for her work creating
several faith-based, pro-life ministries, including fully licensed medical clinics which she has strategically placed
near or next to California abortion clinics. In February 2010, Kathleen joined the 43rd President of the United States,
George W. Bush as a recipient of the acclaimed Cardinal John J. O’Connor Pro-Life Award for her distinguished
achievement in service to the pro-life effort.
Starting as a small pregnancy resource center in 1981, Birth Choice Health Clinics has grown to include 6 fully licensed community clinics serving Orange and Los Angeles counties. Their 6th clinic, the area’s first completely mobile unit, began service in October 2010. In March of 2011, the new Birth Choice Health Clinic of Napa Valley will also be operational, moving the Birth Choice pro-life medical model into Northern California for the first time. 2011 will also see the opening of a Birth Choice Health Clinic in Hollywood, CA., one of the nations most populated areas of homeless teen runaways with staggeringly high statistics of teen pregnancy and abortion.
Kathleen’s life-long mission is “to compete for the lives of women and their children – both born and pre-born.” A personal experience with abortion as a single mother in 1980, and the shame that surrounded it, was what introduced Kathleen to Birth Choice. After realizing that her pre-abortion counsel with a nationally prominent family-planning organization did not involve at least a discussion of choosing life for her unborn child, she decided to dedicate her life to preventing other young mothers from making the same mistake. It was at that time that she gave her aborted baby a name, “Toby”, that would figure prominently in the growth of the organization. Kathleen started volunteering at Birth Choice Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC; formerly Birthright) in Oklahoma City later that year. Five years later in 1986, she used a move to Orange County, Calif., as an opportunity to reopen an existing PRC in Mission Viejo. Little did she know that this one small office was the embryo of what was to become a network of Birth Choice Health Clinics serving thousands of young women and men annually.
Many pro-life ministries have taken notice of Birth Choice Health Clinic’s business model. In 2009, Focus on the Family® featured Kathleen Eaton in the December issue of Citizen Magazine as part of a year-long feature about pregnancy medical clinics who are exemplary in their operations and in their services to women. Birth Choice was also selected by Focus as a featured California clinic for media sources to interview as part of their Faces of Option Ultrasound media campaign, with Ms. Eaton as the designated spokeswoman. In November of 2010, Jim Daly, CEO of Focus on the Family, reaffirmed Focus’ commitment and support to Birth Choice in his presentation at the Annual Gala of Birth Choice.
In like manner, the Catholic Community and California Bishops have also long recognized both Kathleen for her leadership in the pro-life movement and Birth Choice for their progressive medical model. Noting their support, Kathleen was named the 2011 Pro-Life Person of the Year by the Diocese of Orange.
Kathleen introduced other services, as well as ultrasound diagnostics, that Birth Choice Health Clinics provides today. These include STI testing/treatment, HIV/AIDS testing, pregnancy testing and counseling, well woman care and limited prenatal care. These services are all provided free of charge to clients without consideration of race, gender, socio-economic demographic or religious affiliation.
Although controversial, Birth Choice Health Clinics offers STI testing and treatment services in an attempt to establish a trusted relationship between Birth Choice and its demographic – young, sexually active men and women. Testing also provides clients an opportunity to begin or reestablish abstinence through Birth Choice’s sexual integrity (Teen Integrity) program. National statistics show that a high percentage of these “at risk” young women may one day find themselves in a crisis pregnancy and will turn to the most trusted resource for pregnancy testing – Birth Choice Health Clinics.
Since becoming medical, Birth Choice has logged over 65,000 client visits in their clinics as well as a host of auxiliary programs serving women and men in difficult circumstances. Since integrating all the medical and educational services Birth Choice offers the community, well over 200,000 young people have been impacted by the ministry of Birth Choice in one way or another. In the past 3 years Birth Choice has had over 100,000 website visits and counts on its Web presence for a majority of its clients.
In 1996, Kathleen founded the first Toby’s House Shelter for pregnant women with children. Toby’s House, the housing ministry of Birth Choice Health Clinics, consists of two residential maternity homes in Orange County as well as a women’s auxiliary support group.
As a leading pro-life advocate in the public and private school system, Kathleen has spent years teaching abstinence and abortion education at the high school and college levels. In 2005, she strengthened Birth Choice’s commitment to education by founding Teen Integrity, a program promoting the teaching of an abstinence-only viewpoint in public and Christian schools throughout Southern California.
Most recently Kathleen and the Birth Choice Board of Directors initiated the formation of an 8 member “Vision and Strategic Planning” committee to develop a vision for the development of a plan to expand the Birth Choice best practices model throughout California and beyond. The vision of Birth Choice is to overcome the culture of abortion in this country, leaving behind a Legacy of Life.
Kathleen speaks in frank and honest terms. Her passion is transparent and she communicates with authority and commitment. She has the unique ability to reach each audience member where they are, regardless of age, gender, religious affiliation or demographic, creating an intimate relationship to her audience regardless the size of the room or number of people present.
